1970 21 Athletics Rookies Vida Blue Gene Tenace

Vida Blue Gene Tenace

This card is what a rookie card should look like.  A rookie card should not simply be a player's first card. Every player has a first card. But there was something special when Topps actually tried to guess who would be a future star and put two or three guesses on a separate card. Rookie cards are interesting because Topps actually guessed right once in a while.  Even when only one out of three players on a rookie card was a bona fide future star, it meant that Topps guessed right.  Most of the rookie cards from the1970s featured two or three players that went nowhere.  Many of the great players did not appear on a separate rookie card.

So when two of the mainstays of the A's dynasty appeared together on one rookie card, it was a big deal. This card might be the best rookie card of all time. It certainly rivals the 1972 Fisk/Cooper card (or any of the many other 1972 rookie cards). Investors would probably disagree, but I am not addressing dollar values here.
