1970 22 Ray Washburn

Ray Washburn

This is the first hatless card in the set. St. Louis traded Washburn in the off-season to the Reds.  Topps did not have an opportunity to photograph him in his new uniform, so they used an extra photo they had taken the year before without a hat.

The stats on the back reveal the importance of looking beyond the win-loss record.  Washburn had a good lifetime ERA, a SO/BB ratio in excess of 2/1 and an IP/BB ratio of 3.73/1.

1970 would be his last year in the majors and this card would be his last.  Washburn's final appearance came in game 5 of the 1970 World Series against the Orioles. He pitched the 7th inning and part of the 8th before yielding to Clay Carroll.

This is the second Reds card of the set.  The Reds were the first team with two cards.
